  • Worked support for an electricity supplier. I was able to see a frightening amount of info about the customers. Even past ones who had moved elsewhere.

We also kept notes about each call, email, web or app chat. So if you were an asshole in the past, everyone will know going forward.

Also fuck landlords and landladies etc. More often than not, they were shitty to deal with.

Also we would often use Google Maps and Streetview to see what your house looked like. We also had pictures of the inside because the installation techs took pictures to confirm that works were completed as specified.

Alll of this was available to us for any reason, at any time with no oversight. And none of it was encrypted. There was also government websites in use up to 2020 that required internet explorer to use and had passwords as trivial as ‘Password1’.

I left that job because the pay was lousy and the stress was pretty full on. I respected a lot of people that worked there. Both higher ups and people who came after me. But fuck was there a lot of potential for bad actors or like stalkers etc to mess with your info.

I would reccomend to everyone. Please use password managers. Especially decent open source ones like Bitwarden. Take note of every piece of info that you give a company. From your phone number, address, email etc to even when you contacted them. Also try to not have your home look like an abandoned hovel on Streetview lol. Easier said than done I know. But it may affect your dealings with support people that you need help from. And lastly, please dont use Password1 as a login. Ever. Like please.

  • I’m going to assume you are not a troll lol.

Its a frame from Indiana Jones. A movie about an American archeology professor exploring places for ancient artifacts.

In the first movie, he is searching for the Holy Grail but is also fighting a bunch of actual Nazis.

The joke here is that Indiana Jones is an actual professor in these movies. In real life, college professors tend to lean politically left.

Meanwhile, hes beating the shit out of a Nazi. Modern day Nazis adore Donald Trump and so obviously lean far right.

So Indiana Jones beating up a Nazi is like a leftie professor beating up and an Alt Right Trump supporter.

Its not funny since I have to explain it now. But on the 0.01% chance you are not a troll, at least now you know

  • “Can we have something like multireddits please”

“Can someone explain how the Fediverse works”

“I’m making a new Lemmy app”

“I can’t wait for [x] to make a Lemmy app”

    “Wtf is a tankie”

    “Rule”

    “[A meme about being trans]”

    “[A meme about being neuro-atypical]”

“[A meme you have seen reposted a dozen times elsewhere]”

    “I miss Apollo”

PS, I dont mean this in a bad way. I love Lemmy and it is hugely encouraging to see so many people use it. I’m just poking fun at trends I’m seeing emerge.

  • As far as I know, companies like Gfycat make money by selling API access to different apps. Like say in a messaging app likeTelegram or Signal. The easiest way for them to integrate a gif search and send function inside of messages is through API access to Gfycat’s servers. Gfycat then charges them for this streamlined integration and access.

That plus selling user data or ads on their website means they will have some revenue. I dont know if its enough to keep them afloat. Since they are shutting down, I’m guessing it didnt pan out so well.

  • The man speaking in this clip is Nilay Patel. Hes the Editor in Chief at The Verge.

He also used to be a lawyer before moving to journalism full time. So he knows Bullshit when he sees it.

I used to think that The Verge were just a bunch of Apple zealots who couldn’t even do a pc build video properly. They’ve come along way since then. Reddit would be absolutely insane to try and take on something like The Verge.

Side note , Nilay also has a podcast called Decoder where he interviews the heads of companies to get an idea of how they run and what their goals are. Its a pretty good show and I reccomend it. The one where Nilay takes on the head of Substack was hilarious
