I’m not sure anything from this instance is federating anywhere since this change.

Looking at activitypub, attempting to subscribe to something gets no reply (the screenshot below shows me trying with 3 different communities, followed by what’s expected to happen with a random community on another 0.19 instance)

Looking at an active community (like [email protected]), there’s been 6 posts in the past 2 days that aren’t showing up anywhere else (at <whatever_instance>/c/[email protected])

Re: trending communities, if a link gives you this error:

The server returned this error: FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/post/list?community_name=exchristian%40lemmy.one&amp;page=1&amp;limit=20&amp;sort=New&amp;type_=All. This may be useful for admins and developers to diagnose and fix the error

that’s just a timeout that’s usually resolved by a refresh. It’ll happen more often with links from that list than elsewhere, because it’s more likely to provide links that no-one else on feddit.nl has visited before.

I just had a click around on the latest post, and that was the only error I got. If it’s not that though, please leave a comment. I’m on the same instance as you, so can investigate what the problem might be, and it’s my bot, so can try to fix it if need be.

I created an account here and a couple of communities, but it was sort of by accident that I’m here. At the time, join-lemmy referred to the Awesome Instances GitHub page, and that recommended feddit.nl, and said don’t overthink it, so I didn’t. If I had thought about it more, I would’ve joined up to feddit.uk I suppose (although that’s the instance that people are now concerned about now, ironically enough).

But given the .nl domain, maybe feddit.nl should just be a place for people to talk to one another in languages (other than English) that are popular in The Netherlands. For the focus to generally be specific to one location, and for Communities that other instances in the Fediverse don’t provide. (sort of like what I imagine feddit.it does for the people of Italy).

I’m fairly active on Lemmy (from accounts on endlesstalk.org and lemmy.world), but the content I really want to create is animated in some form - as a gif or a webp file. My efforts in this are being stymied by Lemmy, as it seems utterly determined to wreck them, either by half-arsing an unwanted transcode, or re-compressing something that’s already compressed. So, similar to others in this thread, but for completely different reasons, I’m waiting for the software itself to mature before I can fully unleash my genius on the world.

As for frontends, I’ve started using photon at lemmy.world. It’s really nice, especially for the aforementioned animated stuff. I’ve even started using phtn.app for browsing on my phone too. (There’s also Tesseract, a fork of photon that I’ve only seen at db0 and dubvee.org, but would like to play with.)

NSFW’ing stuff isn’t a particularly y good way to hide spoilers, btw (it’s not the same as it is on Reddit)

It will (probably) blur the image for anyone who’s set their account to view NSFW, but the majority of members here just won’t see the post at all.

To the extent that spoiler tags are supported, it might be better to include images as an inline link, surrounded by spoiler tags.

It depends how you’re accessing Lemmy.
On the website, you can click on the 3 vertical dots near the post or comment, and chose ‘Block User’ from there.
On the Voyager app, you can click the user’s name, and then select it from the 3 horizontal dots.
It might be that whatever app you’re using doesn’t support it. Before Voyager did, I used to go into my Settings and then search for the user (e.g. [at] bot [at] lemmit [dot] online) in the ‘Blocks’ sections.

Yeah it’s a thankless task. I don’t know who it was who thought “Let’s start our own Reddit … with reposted stuff from Reddit!”

I disable them individually as them come up, but it’s a pain, and can see why people just Death Star the lot of them (is “death star” a verb?).

As the author of a bot that I hope is useful though, it’s kind of a bummer.

I heard an interview with Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma in Rogue One and Andor) who, when asked what her favourite Star Wars film was, gave the uncool answer of RotJ, and as the interview was ending, could be heard frantically trying to correct herself - “Argh! I meant Empire!, I meant Empire … [fades out]”.

I’ve always been down on the third film because of “Death Star 2” (like, think of another thing George), and I never went to see the 40th anniversary re-release because it was the ‘Special’ edition. (Speaking of the OT and editions, I saw the ADYWAN fanedit of Empire recently - it’s the best one, IMHO).

For any weird, bigoted stuff, lots of downvotes and no replies is hopefully the message an OP needs to receive to get the hint that they should by plying their recruitment attempts elsewhere. Engaging them is probably the worst thing to do.

I’m still transferring stuff between my phone and computer using FTP, like some caveman.

I can’t claim to understand this tech yet, but I feel like so many of these communities being on the same instance isn’t the way it’s supposed to be.

I don’t have iOS to compare it to Apollo, but WefWef is - so far - the best way I’ve come across to browse Lemmy. I’ve installed it on my Android phone, and it handled logging in and presenting a home screen with the communities I’m subscribed to better than the Jerboa, which was very flaky about logging in, and only wants to show me the communities that the instance I signed up to happens to have.

WefWef didn’t show any posts before I logged in, and it’s not super intuitive about how to do so, and once I’d figured out that I need to press the middle icon, it turns out I’d made life a bit harder for myself by signing up with a less popular instance (“don’t overthink it” they said!).

Anyway, I’m also using WefWef from my PC - the feed is a bit narrow obviously, but it’s worth mentioning that the app works well from Windows too.
