I think they mean something like widevine a la Netflix. Granted there are bypasses for some levels, but that could be a problem imo, iiuc that’s why there aren’t any alternate frontends for Netflix or HBO. I think that would also potentially mean issues playing YouTube in chromium or firefox on Linux if they used L1 (not sure what the current state of widevine on Linux is, last time I had Netflix I couldn’t watch on Linux and had to use my phone or Chromecast)

I think a blocklist of common sources of biased and sensationalized / misinformation sources would be the best option. It would definitely be a ton of work to whitelist every good source, and you especially want to encourage smaller trusted industry-specific sources (think like pv magazine), there are a lot of those small high quality sources that are geared towards industry professionals. With a short blocklist you could probably cover a significant portion of the loudest biased sources of misinformation.

Also related to Batman is bmx, such as bmx6. I forget if it’s separate or something that works together with batman it’s been a while since I touched it

It’s all about the right tool for the job. This community largely isn’t about rural areas, it’s about cities where cars shouldn’t be the tool for the job (and in big cities where cars are the most convenient option, it’s usually a bad idea that’s been designed into the city, not a fact if life as many carbrains believe)

People love to bring up rural areas that are unliveable without cars as if it’s a refutation but it’s really not the point. Granted those areas could also be much better with a dense walkable old fashioned downtown (like you might find in some rural areas that didn’t get redeveloped for car-centric sprawl), most of this movement is about people who live in cities and have to drive because some genius decided to zone all the grocery stores miles away from the single family homes. Or people who have to drive several hundred feet because the city decided it doesn’t need sidewalks and crosswalks.

Same issue is why mastodon needs your origin server to be online to migrate to a new server. In both cases, federating a public key for the server or accounts would allow either to pop up at a new domain and prove it has the authority to migrate links to the new location.

With activitypub all involved servers also replicate the content so I’m not sure what distinction you’re trying to make. That’s why we can still see all the communities, posts, and comments on the servers that are still online.

I think this answer is the most accurate. People get too hung up same names on different servers. There will always be multiple versions of a community whether they have the same name on different servers or whether one of them snagged the og name and others prefixed with Real_x / True_x. Imo I like it this way better because there’s less favoritism to the one that comes first / people can’t universally squat on a community name

Hetzners risk averseness is so annoying. I tried to sign up and rent a dedi to replace my rack mount nas. Considering electric costs I was happy to pay a few hundred a month for substantial storage. Didn’t realize they didn’t accept privacy.com cards (I don’t even use them to cancel, it’s just so I can change banks and switch 1 billing link instead of 100). Account rejected and deleted and no response from support.

I always hated that crypto shit stole the name web3/web3.0. I think for a short period it seemed decentralized apps were calling themselves web3.0 but now it’s just the fediverse I think. I like calling it the true web because the fediverse is very much like the old days where we had niche sites with their own communities, it’s just that the content isn’t locked into each site and we don’t need a million different forum accounts to participate everywhere. Like the old days but supercharged with new tech.

Someone needs to hook revolt up to a matrix homeserver. I’m kinda surprised there still isn’t like a discord UI clone matrix client along the lines of how elk.zone is a twitter UI inspired frontend for mastodon. Having not used discord much I’m not sure what’s really missing, maybe it’s just the stricter adherence to spaces on the left bar and the lack of non-current-space-related channels listed above the current space’s channel list.

Tbh I kinda hate how discord works (and how impossible it feels managing being in 30-40 servers and figuring out which server that doot-doot sound came from when at least 10-15 at a minimum have unread badges even 30 seconds after I mark everything everywhere as read), but I do love the look and feel.

I don’t necessarily disagree, I just think that the solution is to cultivate the content here. Not connect with the same old corporate platforms that caused the problems in the first place.

Isn’t it also just not open to federation at the moment? So the federated/decentralized aspect could just be vaporware and never happen. I don’t even begin to take their word for it until it stops being de-facto centralized.

I think it’s easy to take this personally but I think it’s more about the moderation tools in Lemmy not being adequate at the moment so this is the best bandaid solution for now. We need to quickly put effort into developing better moderation tools like limiting other servers without fully defederating, limiting specific communities, forcing nsfw on communities/instances, proxying reports to origin servers so admins have better feedback on their instance user’s bad behavior, and many other things if we want to prevent defederating like this from being the only option.

I think infighting about this decision and differing moderation styles instead of focusing together on moderation challenges and tooling deficiencies risks tearing the community / federation apart and is counterproductive to the goal of being better than reddit.
