I really hope this becomes the defacto forum for this community. I’ve been dabbling in the Lemmyverse and it seems like the most appropriate solution at this time. Not only am I suspicious of Twitter/X, but it is a terrible design for forum-like interaction - in that regard Reddit’s format really is ideal, and that’s what Lemmy has emulated.

I’m working with ppseeds to set up a dedicated Lemmy server that isn’t dependent on any external arbiter.

this is the best news i’ve heard all day. this is the ideal solution. An internet community that is owned and operated and administered by the community participants, not some centralized authority.

Nobody can deplatform you when you are your own platform host. it takes work but the reward is autonomy and freedom to communicate.

@[email protected] is the instance administrator for that instance and has already gained experience in the business of hosting a lemmy instance. you could possibly reach out to them if you have any questions or are looking for direction.

It’s a good question - we are on the Lemmy.world aggregated server currently, but I’m working on setting up a server we own to host the instance.

        Anyone want to help?

I know we’re all flying by the seat of our pants atm but once things form up a little better will PP & Co make an announcement/ELI5 post on where to find things?

Dabbling and figuring out some of these new sites (including X even)- but somewhat anxious on losing/missing messages. Perfect example: “what’s the difference between this lemmy server (you made?) Versus a ‘dedicated’ one?”

Thank you for all you do and Happy 🦃 to you and your family!

Further, I’ll say this community should no longer the “property” of PP, but the collective we’ve become. We are all individual investors making our own decisions & enjoying this unique community of people, not PPseeds himself - in fact I’ve watched maybe 5 minutes of the show ever; can’t stand it, and certainly don’t have time to listen to 4hrs of BS for maybe a few minutes of solid content. This community, though, is special. Nowhere else that I’ve found allows for big-picture discussions outside of specific stock tickers, and I do appreciate the GME/Butterfly/IEP (and more) theories & tinfoil.

Again, fuck Twitter/X. Any links to that awful platform should be through nitter.net like a condom.

I often don’t have 4 hours for dildo slaps, but they are funny as fuck. I do have infinite time for some Region_Formal blue boxes, Travis’s accounting depth or Dr. Jakes insights into logic flows to an outcome, so I prefer the written to the show for actual deep DD, but love the show for the people, the insights and the speculation.

Reddit nuked sub which was getting millions of views daily. Sub is mostly discussing stock ticker bbbyq and the potential behind it. Community has not been informed why specifically it was banned but at this point who cares. Fuck Reddit.

Palladium Tarnish or some other not-real person felt like they were being attacked because their online persona that isn’t them in real life started to feel like their anonymous online persona was actually real and being attacked by people on X, so the most logical thing to do is ban them on another platform.

Can’t wait to see what bullshit reason they have for banning the sub. I’ve seen other subs with crazy amounts of hate speech and racism and they don’t even get quarantined, let alone banned. Reddit is a joke.

Reddit’s reason is: “because we said so”

it doesn’t really matter what their justification is. it’s their platform, we are always subject to their centralized authority. if they decide they don’t like a community, on any weak or strong justification, they reserve the right to get rid of that community.

Great work Ross. Thanks for creating this community here.

I was just about to respond to your comment on Reddit but that thread was locked before I could.

Ross, could you please go on the pp show live stream tonight and bring up the discussion of Lemmy?

by the way the link you provided did not work, you’ll want to use: https://lemmy.world/c/theppshow

the structure is quite different from reddit and cannot be “compromised” the same way reddit can.

on reddit, all subreddits are subject to the single centralized authority of Reddit Inc. If Reddit Inc. doesn’t like your community, they can and will get rid of it. that simple.

On Lemmy, every instance / server is independent of all other servers. you are still subject to the authority of the instance administrators, and just like on Reddit, if you are on an instance and for some reason those admins don’t like you, whether because you are breaking the rules or for some other reason, they too reserve the ability to get rid of you from their platform.

but, the beauty of the fediverse is that anyone is able to start their own instance if they wanted to. if you have a specific topic that you want to have a community for in the fediverse, but some instances don’t want your community on their instance, you can always find a new instance or start your own. nobody can stop you from starting your own instance.

Does this mean that lemmy could be used as a durable repository for DD? Or are servers/instances subject to wipes for reasons out of the control of the communities? It sounds like the vulnerability is still there, just in a different and less corporate form. Like a BBS in a lot of ways.

there are flaws with any platform and lemmy has numerous.

the administrator of an instance could decide to shut down the instance, and everything hosted on that instance would become unavailable to everyone else.

so, i personally would not depend on any single lemmy instance to necessarily be an invincible repository for DD. anything can happen.

ape historian (apehistorian.com), aka u/elegant-remote6667 on Reddit, has been backing up reddit threads from superstonk and wallstreetbets and maybe a few other subreddits but i don’t think theppshow subreddit. So, lots of stuff is backed up by this individual on his own equipment.

there are other solutions for long term record keeping, but everything will always be changing. i now have to go and find archive links for a bunch of ppshow subreddit links because i can no longer get them from reddit.

Being cautious, we should store DD on pastebin or a similar doc site and link to it from Lemmy.

that is certainly an option that could work.

Alternatively, anyone is capable of manually archiving any web page using archive.org. DD authors that are extra diligent can make their DD in Lemmy (warning: unless i am mistaken, Lemmy posts have a character limit of 10,000 characters) and then take the link to that post and paste it into the box on archive.org to Save Page Now

archive.org likely contains the vast majority of posts from the pp show, however finding them would be the tricky part.

Honestly, it has to be multiplatform going forward. This is one place, twitter is another, but we also need to use pastebin for DD that we don’t want Sparkled into oblivion
